My kids love a good ol’ ham and cheese sandwich. The sad news for them is that I don’t often buy lunchmeat.
Why?
A) The health benefits of lunchmeat are nothing to be embraced.
B) It is a huge grocery budget buster at a minimum of $5 per pound.
I have succumbed to the lure of lunchmeats more often recently due to packing 16 lunches a week. I am finding alternatives, but there is nothing wrong with having a deli sandwich some days.
This week I was able to buy a whole 3 pound Black Forest Ham at Aldi’s for $9. That is the equivalent of $3 per pound. I guess I threw that out there for the math resistant in the crowd.
I brought it home and sliced it thin with my handy dandy food processor.
Voila…chipped ham!
This is not a “let’s go hog wild” deal because it is still not entirely frugal. Whole hams will go on sale much cheaper closer to the holidays. When they do we are going to stock up! However, we are only in September and I have all of those lunches waiting to be packed this week.
Can we just give Aldi’s a “woot”?! In fact, let’s make it a double “woot”. Just because I want to.
I never would have thought to do this. How silly am I?? It is a great idea? I am thinking it would make sense to cut your ham in 3rds and freeze it that way, since it only lasts so long in the fridge, esp. after you chip it. GREAT ideas, Billie!
