In honor of Valentine’s Day, I am reposting a post that I originally posted on my personal blog, 1 Crazy Journey in 2010. It is the story of how my husband and I became “us”.
The theater was quiet, dark and filled with couples. It was Valentine’s Day 1997 and I was excited to be enjoying a movie with girlfriends. The voice I heard ring out is one that I will never forget for the rest of my life. In fact, it changed my life…forever.
“Excuse me. Excuse me!” The voice announced over the noise of the film.
Every eye in the room turned around towards the voice in the back.
“Is there a Flamingo in the house?”
I felt my blood drain as I shifted downwards in my seat.
Too late. He spotted me.
Hiding behind a dozen of large stem roses was a smiling young Rockstar (because he was not a nurse yet).
“Here. I believe these are for you.”
With that he quickly turned and walked out.
I stood stunned.
One, for the reason that I could not believe every eye in the house was now on me.
Second, because I could not believe the Rockstar was thinking of me. You know. In that way. In the way that one would give flowers on Valentine’s day way. We had met just one month before. I never saw the signs of his admiration (which he still declares were as bright as the neon signs on Broadway).
After what felt like 5 minutes, I willed my legs to walk to the theater hall. As I walked, women everywhere were elbowing their significant others and whispering, “why can’t you do something like that?”
Once in the light of the hallway, I read the card with shaking hands.
“Roses are red. Violets are blue. Forget your secret admirer,
because I’m the man for you.”
I didn’t know what to do. What does one do when someone rushes in declaring their admiration for you?
So with timidity, I began to walk towards the theater lobby. He was only 2 steps from the doors to the outside (which in his mind was the doors to humiliation should I not come).
With a meek voice, I said “Rockstar?”.
And I just smiled.
He turned around and began walking towards me with the hugest boy-like grin.
“So” he said. “Do you want to go out sometime?”
“Sure” I responded sheepishly.
“OK. Great”.
“Great.”
And doing what any Frugal Flamingo would do, I returned to watch my movie while the Rockstar waited outside. Appalling I know. Yet, he waited.
So that is how our journey together officially began. And oh, what one crazy journey it has been.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
