Stock Up on Meat

It is that time of year again.  Time to buy your turkeys.  This week at Giant and Weis (my local grocery stores), whole turkeys are on sale for $.58/pound.  My suspicion is that almost all grocery stores will have turkeys on sale the next 2 weeks.  This is a slight price increase compared to last year’s $.49/pound.  I suspect it is due to the cost of turkeys rising by 4%.

I think this is it.  This is the stockpile price of the season.

Even if you are not cooking a turkey on Thanksgiving, you need to buy one.  In fact, I recommend buying one every week they go on sale for this rock bottom price.

Think beyond Thanksgiving.  Store them in your extra freezer.  Pull them out through the winter to feed your family for a week.  This is the cheapest way to feed a family when meat is involved.   Still need a little turkey convincing?  Here are some ways you can use your turkey.  Remember, making your own broth will almost fully compensate you for the cost of your turkey.

Homemade broth

Turkey Noodle Soup

Turkey Tetrazzini

Turkey Tacos

What about you?  Do you buy turkeys on sale to use later?

  1. Was just thinking last night that I need to go buy a couple of turkeys. One for Thanksgiving day and one for the freezer. One day I'll own a freezer big enough for TWO birds! :)
