Grow Your Own Vegetable Gold

What else would one do on a rain day, but go garden shopping?  Ok.  Probably no one else, but me.  I’ve procrastinated with planting because we are doing things a bit different this year with our vegetable garden.

Are you new to gardening? Let me guess, you are a bit intimidated and nervous.  I understand.  I am going to encourage you to give it a go this year.  The first vegetable you will plant is a tomato.  Before you say “eww!  I don’t like tomatoes”, hear me out.  For some reason, automatically everyone thinks you grow tomatoes to eat straight off the plant.  I love them that way, but not everyone does.

Tomatoes are your vegetable gold.  There is no other vegetable that is as versatile as a OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA tomato.  Here are 5 simple things you use tomatoes for:

    • tomato sauce
    • diced tomatoes
    • pizza sauce
    • spaghetti sauce
    • salsa

Do you purchase these through out the year?  I suspect you ingest at least half of these products.  Weekly.

It is not difficult to make your own sauces and salsa to store.  During harvest time, I will share a variety of ways to freeze or can your tomato products.  It’s fun.  It’s easy.  It’s addicting.  The other easy thing?  Growing the tomato.  Seriously.  It is really hard to mess them up.  I can be a lazy gardener and my tomatoes have never flopped.

Just do it!  Go to your local nursery and purchase a few small tomato plants.  You can grow them in pots if you want!  I can purchase 6 tomato plants for $2 at my favorite greenhouse.  This year I am planting 24 tomato plants.  I’m not obsessed.  Really.  I’m not.

We are just starting to talk about vegetable gardening!  I will soon share with you everything I’m growing and a new technique I’m trying!

Do you grow your own fruits and veggies?  I can’t wait to hear!!
