Did You Know? Freezing in glass jars

I think I am in a "series" mode.  I continue to think of new themes that I can start as blog posts.  I suspect that you, the reader, do not really care if it is a theme or not.  However, it is helping me to focus the jumbles of posts in my head.

Today's theme introduction is Did you Know? tips & tricks to save you time and money.  I did not define the themes to be ostentaciously creative. Nor,am I commiting to specific days to share my themes.  However, they will appear several times over the month.

So, let us get rolling....

I have heard from several people how excited they were to make their own broth!  I told you it is easy.  Often you have broth and you need to store it for the future.  Freezing is obviously your easiest option.

So,here is a tip that will save you money in freezing your broth.  Actually, this tip can be used for anything you choose to freeze.

Do you have extra glass canning jars laying around?  If not, perhaps your aunt or mother has a few extra.  Did you know that broth freezes beautifully in a glass canning jar?  Simply fill the broth to the 1st lip of the jar.  Do not fill the jar beyond this point because it needs room to expand.

When you want to use your broth, simply run the jar under warm water.  I usually take a knife and loosen the broth from the inside of the jar.  It will fall right out of the jar.

Be careful when storing the jars in the freezer.  Obviously, if you drop a glass jar it will break.  However, I doubt you  needed me to tell you that.

I freeze a lot of things in my canning jars.  I store beans, rice, soup, diced tomatoes and broth in my jars.

If you are interested in purchasing canning jars, you can typically get them at your regular grocery store year round.  Walmart only carries canning jars during prime canning season (summer & fall months).  A dozen of pint size jars will cost you $10 when they are not on sale.

Also, a pint size jar holds almost 2 cups of liquid.  That is the equivalent of 1 can you would purchase in the store.

So that is my tip and trick for the day!
