Saving on Groceries: What’s in Your Cart?

With grocery costs climbing, even the “frugal boycotter” will begin considering how to lower their bill. So far we learned that Menu planning comes first. Next, shop multiple stores. Add Aldi to your routine.

So, what comes next?

I continue to avoid discussing coupons. Don’t worry. That discussion is coming. I just believe in starting elsewhere first. Each person will feel differently about this. However, this is what I did and what I believe in: look in your cart.

“Flamingo, look in my cart for what?”1071221_53281575

Let me explain. In the summer of 2009, I realized my grocery spending had climbed. We had just adopted from China. Adding child number 4 took me off the playing field for a little. However, I was spending too much. Even with Aldi (gasp)

I remember unloading my groceries and looking. I mean really looking at what I was buying. I meal planned and did not purchase store made dinners. I didn’t buy a lot junk food. However, something was driving up the price. I took notice to all of the “prepackaged” and “premade” things I had bought. Here is a list of some things that I can remember:

Granola bars, instant oatmeal, canned broth, cream of chicken soup, paper towels, laundry detergent, canned diced tomatoes, bagels, english muffins, pancake mix, syrup, microwave popcorn, canned beans, instant rice, cereal….

None of the above items are horrible purchases alone. Put them all together and you have a grocery bill that will exceed your wallet. I decided to make changes. I was going to eliminate as many of these items from my cart as possible.

I did. The result for me was a more healthy diet and a much lower bill. Making it yourself is cheaper. It is easy. I promise. You already made your own broth. Seriously, how hard was that?

1167404_looking_through_the_tubeHere is your assignment. The next time you go shopping, look in your cart. What is already made for you? Make a list. We are going to figure out how to eliminate it.

On Monday, I will share with you my menu for the week. On Tuesday, we are going to learn about a frugal breakfast option that will eliminate one of the above.

Share with me what you find!

  1. I love this tip. I haven't been feeling well for a while, and got off the frugal bandwagon. Our grocery bill skyrocket. Now that I'm better, I'm buying lots of the basics - potatoes, eggs, baking products, etc... and doing more from scratch. It's a process though, and if I don't pace myself, I get burned out really quickly.

  2. I buy the walmart brand of instant oatmeal (1.50)...I'm hoping you can't tell me a way to make it cheaper because I LOVE it;) LOL
My biggest struggle with things like this is TIME. I sometimes look at stuff in my cart and think "I can make this cheaper" but then realize that I never will because I dont have time! You have four kiddos so I know you have to deal with that too...that would be a fun post: Saving money vs Saving time. I know that most of the time it is worth the time...if you have it:)

  5. Hi there

Your blog caught my eye over at Living Well Wednesdays. My daughter is soo into flamingos right now because she recently made a visit to the zoo.

I digress however. since I'm considered the queen of frugal in my family (really it just means I'm real cheap lol!) seriously though I'm always cutting costs.. its a necessity around here.

This post is 100% accurate. It took me a while to figure it out but I've saved lots of money by doing simple things like buying dried beans and cooking up a batch to freeze, frozen is usually cheaper than canned, if I can't get something fresh or dried. Paper napkins are cheaper than paper towels and washable, reusable cloths are a whole lot more economical than wipes or other kitchen cloths.

I make pancakes and waffles from scratch and I've even made my own syrup at times (though my husband is the only one that prefers it cause I cant get the maple flavour the children like).

Things like pre-cut, pre-washed or pre-seasoned have to get pre-empted (lol) by their sister products. They cost a whole lot more than the whole, unwashed and unseasoned!

Time is, as you say, a real factor and I will admit to having cheated a few times when the occasion calls for it.

By and large though.. it makes a whole of lot of sense and saves a whole lot of cents ;-)

    Thanks for a great post!
