DIY: Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Instant Oatmeal

We know that is cheaper AND healthier to make things homemade. However, is it quick? After all, time is of the essence. Our time is valuable. However, I can guarantee that you have enough time to make this.

Oatmeal. It is one of the healthiest of all breakfast foods. Sadly, the premade instant oatmeal ruins the health benefits by 1189040_14878913adding way too much sugar and other preservatives. Not to mention it gets expensive. Around here a box wouldn’t last 2 mornings!

So, let’s make our own! Seriously, this is so easy that you will bang your head for not doing it earlier.

Buy a container of quick oats. I prefer Quaker if I can get them on sale.

Brown Sugar & Cinnamon Oatmeal

  • Scoop out 1/2 cup oats.
  • Add brown sugar. This is to your liking. Remember that 1 tsp. of sugar is equal to 4 grams. The instant oatmeal has alot of teaspoons added to it. I have my kiddos down to 1- 1 1/2 tsp. In order to lower your sugar intake, gradually filter it out. You will get used to it!
  • Add cinnamon. Again to your liking. I start with a 1/2 tsp.
  • I like our oatmeal made with milk. You have 2 choices with this. You can heat your oatmeal with milk. The other option is to add 1 TBS of milk powder and just add water when heating.
  • As far as how much liquid? Again, this is to your liking. For a 1/2 cup of oats, I would start with 3/4 cup of milk or water.

Want to really save time? Take 5 minutes (it will not take you long) and make this mixture in several sandwich bags. Voila! You have instant oatmeal packs that you and the kids can grab in the morning! The beauty of this is that you can reuse the bags again for more instant oatmeal packs. Your kids can do this for you and they will think it is fun!

This takes no time at all! The cost savings are tremendous! The large container of quick oats at Aldi’s is $1.99. This container will give you 30 servings of oatmeal! That is only $.07/serving!

So, what are you waiting for? Go to your pantry and make some now!
